In the East Bay's Ashland Zócalo project, green space celebrates Ashland's diverse cultures and community collaboration. Over two decades, Hispanic/Latino and Asian populations grew 70%, bringing new traditions and perspectives. This led to crowded, green-space-scarce areas. HARD, TPL, and the community envisioned Ashland Zócalo, with WRT securing over $7M in funding. The community-led, bilingual engagement shaped the park, involving local entities like Eden Area Council, schools, Sheriff’s Dept., and Youth Center. A mosaic of recycled tiles symbolizes the diverse community that supported the design process. High school students planted native flora in collaboration with WRT. The park features a flexible plaza with trees like Maples, Ginkgos, and Golden Rain, providing shade and sunlight. I led the design team, including architecture, civil, lighting, irrigation, and mural artists.
