Mission Bay - Affordable Housing Courtyard

Project Type

Landscape Architecture

Location

San Francisco

Design of a courtyard for a 100% affordable housing project in San Francisco's Mission Bay district. This courtyard serves as an essential communal gathering space since unit sizes are limited. A custom-designed bike pavilion was detailed, allowing light to filter through laser-cut perforated panels. Bamboo will quickly grow to fill this courtyard, creating a series of intimate spaces within an otherwise communal setting. This project received the 2023 ULI Americas Award for Excellence, the AIA National Award for Excellence in Affordable Housing, the 2023 American Architecture Award, and an Honor Award from ARCHITECT Magazine. It was designed by Peter Trio (SD-CD) while at GLS, with special credit to Architect Roselie Ledda of PTA for fearlessly leading this project. Photography by Bruce Damonte.
